Austin Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit founded in 1985 that creates and preserves safe, affordable homes for families in Central Texas who face a gap between housing costs and earnings. It operates from Austin, Texas, and works through a collaborative model that brings together partner families, volunteers, donors, corporations, public partners, and community organizations, including partnerships with local governments, employers, foundations, and civic groups.
The organisation runs three main programmes. The Homeownership Program combines construction of affordable homes with homebuyer education, individualized housing counselling and long-term support, with homes starting at approximately $152,000. The Home Repair Program carries out critical repairs for low-income homeowners, helping families remain safely in their homes and neighbourhoods. ReStore home-improvement stores process and sell donated furniture, appliances, building materials and home goods, with proceeds supporting the housing programmes.
More than 570 families have been helped to build and purchase affordable homes through Austin Habitat for Humanity. The work is underpinned by a volunteer network of more than 11,000 people, and the stated aims include strengthening neighbourhoods and building lasting financial stability for partner families.
