Kirby Corporation operates the largest inland and offshore tank barge fleets in the United States through its Marine Transportation business. Its vessels carry petrochemicals, black oil, refined products, agricultural chemicals, dry bulk commodities, sugar and coal along the Mississippi River System, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific coasts.

A second business, Distribution and Services, provides nationwide sales, distribution, rental, maintenance and aftermarket support for diesel engines, transmissions, reduction gears, pumps, power generation equipment, electrical systems, energy storage systems and oilfield service equipment. Kirby's brands also manufacture and remanufacture pressure pumping units and specialized industrial equipment.

The company maintains a corporate training facility that uses simulations and working equipment to prepare crews and technicians. It issues more than 1,000 training certificates a year, to Kirby employees, customers and U.S. Coast Guard personnel.
