East Sussex County Council
Local government authority serving over half a million people in East Sussex, employing more than 10,000 staff across social care, education, transport and other services.
East Sussex County Council is the local government authority for the county of East Sussex, where it has operated since 1889. Headquartered in Lewes, the council delivers services to more than half a million residents, businesses and visitors, and employs over 10,000 people across five main departments. It is one of the county's largest employers.
Its work is organised into Adult Social Care and Health, which provides social care for residents over 16 alongside public health responsibilities; Children's Services, covering social care for under-16s, state education and childcare; Communities, Economy and Transport, responsible for libraries, registrars, customer services, roads, transport planning and environmental initiatives; Business Services, handling finances, IT, human resources, procurement and property; and Governance Services, which oversees the council's legal and constitutional arrangements.
Together these functions span areas including transport and highways, waste management, planning, business support and environmental services. Roles within the council give staff a direct influence on the education, social, mental, financial and physical wellbeing of residents, as well as the shape of the local environment, in an organisation whose stated mission is serving the East Sussex community and maintaining effective governance and service delivery.
